Dear (prospective) Visitor, |
|
| 2008 is the Year of the Renaissance in Hungary. The 550th anniversary of the coronation of Matthias Corvinus, a Hungarian King of European renown and a great patron of the arts, provides a historical basis for the events.
Not merely an artistic style, the Renaissance is a way of life, it is discovery and initiative, a modern approach, a philosophy of art, a world view, the spirit of intellectual renewal and innovation, and openness. European values as we see them today began with the Renaissance.
As presented by the Renaissance Year 2008 the series of events are not only a memento to past glory—with imposing exhibitions at museums on related themes—but finds contemporary answers in the fields of culture, the arts, science and technology for the question: what does ‘Renaissance’ mean today?
Come and see the renewal of Hungarian cultural life in 2008 in the halls of museums, gastronomy and the colourful whirl of festivals.
See you here in 2008!
Friendly greetings,
Roland Lengyel
Communications officer

SPRING OF THE QUEENS
It was a nice custom in the Middle Ages that the kings of Hungary gave the queens the Castle of Diósgyőr as an engagement gift. In the 15th century, King Mathias’ wife, Beatrix changed the palace into a real renaissance court. This atmosphere is evoked by the spring-welcoming ceremony in the Castle that begins to awake from its Sleeping Beauty-dream…

NEORENAISSANCE ARCHITECTURE
IN BUDAPEST AN EXHIBITION
The Budapest City Archives presents a selection of architectural plans of Neorenaissance buildings designed by architect Miklos Ybl in the second half of the nineteenth century. The plans, which represent the biggest architectural legacy in the country, include Fővámház (the former Main Tax Office); the Opera House; and Festetics Palace and Károlyi Alajos Palace, both located behind the National Museum. Contemporary photographs and maps provide additional insight into plans of other master architects, including Alajos Hauszmann and Imre Steindl.
Other programmes make part of the exhibition such as a conference on history of architecture. Guided tours are provided on demand. |
